Centre for Astrophysics and Planetary Science

Postgraduate Scholarship in Astronomy & Astrophysics and Mathematics.

Supervisor: Dr Dirk Froebrich

A funded PhD position is available in the field of Astronomy & Astrophysics and Mathematics. This is a 50/50 shared PhD position between the School of Physical Sciences and the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science. The Student will be working under the joint supervision of Dr Dirk Froebrich (SPS) and Dr Alfred Kume (SMSAS). The main objective of the project will be to develop mathematical tools to describe and characterise the projected shapes of molecular clouds. These tools are then to be used to characterise observed cloud in HII regions that are illuminated by EUV/FUV radiation from massive stars and clusters. Finally the methods will also be applied to SPH model calculations of these HII regions in order to determine the initial conditions of the molecular clouds that have led to the formation of the massive stars in their centres.

This PhD Studentship is due to start in September 2015.

Entry requirements and Funding: Applicants should have or expect to obtain a first or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Mathematics or a related subject. This is a 50th Anniversary Scholarship, which will be offered at the standard UK Research Councils' rate (currently £13,863; to cover living costs) and will additionally cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate (currently £3,996 per annum). The Scholarship will also involve undertaking teaching duties (demonstrating) during the period of study.
